Charles River Wine Company's May 2012 Edition

Our 2011 Dry Rosés are Breaking Sales Records!

The core of our Dry Rosé program remains our selections from Provence; Saint Roch les Vignes, Chateau de Pampelonne, and Domaine d'Eole. These selections are all finding great homes in the best restaurants and fine wine shops in Massachusetts. The 2011 release from Chateau Virgile of Costières de Nimes, a blend of 90% Grenache/10% Syrah, adds a value-priced Rhône selection that we feel is the winery's best dry Rosé to date.

Our 2011 American Rosés are outstanding wines. Radio-Coteau's Eric Sussman contributes his dependably complex and delicious County Line Rosé made from a Champagne Pinot Noir clone grown in the Elke Vineyard of Anderson Valley. Hendry's '11 Rosé is in an entirely different style; a saignée of both Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with just a little bit of Cabernet Franc and Primitivo.

The response has been strong to Valdinera's 100% Nebbiolo Chiaro di Luna Rosé, from the Langhe DOC in Piedmont. This colorful Rosé is made from organically grown but not certified grapes. It features scents and flavors suggesting dried cherries and earth. Torre dei Beati's Rosa-Ae Cerasuolo (Peter's personal perennial favorite) shows what great Rosés can be made from Montepulciano grown by a superb winery. This Rosé delivers more red wine character than most. It is released relatively late and is due to arrive in June.

Our recent discovery Finca Torremilanos is the source of our best value in Ribera del Duero's 100% Tempranillo Tinto as well as 100% Tempranillo Rosé under the Montacastrillo label. Their grapes are grown organically but not certified. Montacastrillo's Rosado bursts with cherry fruit flavors with bright balanced acidity.

This group comes together as our strongest Dry Rosé lineup ever! Most are limited in available so please let's us know if you are interested in tasting soon.

Potugal- finally! We welcome Wine in Motion to our Portfolio.

While Kopke Ports has been one of our most successful product lines the table wines of Portugal have remained a frustrating area for us. Wine in Motion is a relatively new company that has assembled a stellar group of wines from the most talented and innovative young winemakers of Portugal. They have already impacted the top wine shops and restaurants in New York and we are excited to roll out their wines here.

These are truly wines for the fine wine trade. We think they will impress you in style, fine quality, and especially value. They are just arriving and we will begin tasting them out in the marketplace this month.

Peter Sagansky's Consumer Articles

Peter is writing consumer articles for his hometown magazine. In April he wrote about 2011 Dry Rosés. In June his piece entitled "The Winebuyer's Guide to Sparkling Wines" will be published. To download pdfs of these pieces please visit our "Article Archive" page.

Making use of this website

When we launched our website in June of 2009 we wrote: "We are determined to keep this site up-to-date and worthy of regular visits by our customers and business associates." We feel good about the job that we have done to date especially in keeping our popular "Reviews Database" up-to-date each month.

You may access articles and reviews by clicking on the items that interest you in our Navigation Bar in the left hand column. Highlights of our web pages are listed below.

The combined content on our suppliers’ websites come together as an online encyclopedia of our wines. We invite you to visit our Links Page to connect to the websites maintained by the Wineries and Specialty Importers that supply our wines.

These sites are packed with details about the wines that we sell and background information about our winemakers and their wineries. Many of the sites offer downloads of ready-to-print point of sale materials.

The sites are listed in alphabetical order by supplier name. Wineries with a "Person's Name" will be found under their last name ("Walter Hansel Winery" in the "H"s.) Wineries named "Bodega...", "Chateau...", "Domaine..." etc., will be found under the estate name ("Bodegas Carrau" in the "C"s.)

Please note that it is rare that we carry every wine that you may come across on a particular supplier's website. Please inquire about any wines that you find of interest that you do not find in our current portfolio.

RATINGS & REVIEWS OF CRWC'S WINES FULLY UPDATED FOR MAY, 2012!

Our MAY 2012 UPDATE: RATINGS & REVIEWS page is jam packed with up-to-date notes about our wines from key wine publications. There you will find two useful files that may be downloaded as pdfs.

“Quotas vs. Priorities” and “Brands vs. Exclusives” are two parts of a series called “Advantage: The Small Wholesaler.” Here Peter Sagansky compares the focus of independent small wholesale wine distributors to the focus of the large commercial houses in today’s tough economic times. These pieces are in a sense our company’s mission statement.

Our “MA Trade Only” page allows our Massachusetts customers to download all of our current
Price Lists and our Price List version complete with Ratings from major publications.

 The
“MA Trade Only” page requires that you enter a “User Name” and “Password” to gain access. Please contact your salesperson or send us a message on our “Contact Our Company”
